week12 tutorial-draft pdf and 500 words

Klein Community Center is a re-designed building based on Mcbride Charles Ryan’s Klein Bottle House. The concept of my house and the original house is the klein bottle. Klein bottle is a four dimensioned shape in math which means if we twist a bottle to make its bottleneck meets the bottom, the bottle will become a whole object and doesn’t have boundary which represent the inside and the outside of the bottle meets at some points. However, in this case, we won’t consider the complexibility of this mathematic concept, cause we can’t build any real object jump out of 3 dimension. So in here, we only consider about the interesting shape of klein bottle and that’s the aspect I concentrate in my design- the form of the building.
To begin with, the shape of the original building is a transformation of klein bottle. For a klein bottle, the bottle is smooth and shining, most of klein bottle we’ve seen is transparent. Instead, in klein bottle house, the basic element of the exterior wall are a great series of triangle pieces. Those triangle pieces combine together to get a feeling of sharp and stable. For the exterior of the building, the architect use dark color like black and for the inside of the building, he uses several bright colors such as red, orange and white. Why did he do that? And that’s a tricky way to let people focus more on the interior of the building.
Next, if we compare klein bottle with the house, it’s not hard to find the circulation of this house is actually quite similar to klein bottle. The bottle is connected, if a little ant is in the bottle, it can crawl the bottle from bottleneck, through the body, bottom and back to neck again. In this house, architect use a staircase to achieve similar effect, we can enter the room from the entrance and go trough the stairs and back to the entrance again.
After the analyzing of the original building, my design is exactly use the same concept of klein bottle house. The only differents between my design and the original building is that my house is in a larger scale. From my perspective, the better way to illustrate the stereoscopic effect of this building is to make it in a larger scale instead of a residential house. That’s why I decide to change it into a community center. By the way, for the form of my building, I use more triangle pieces to make it larger thus my building is even more abstract than the original building and that’s why I have so many plans and elevations to explain it which I will talk it later. The foundation of my building is not a smooth object as klein bottle does. Instead, it’s a box with a holw in the middle. But my method to transmulate it is to divide it into pieces and drag it to form a more contemporary shape. Like the entrance of the building is actually push the wall back to make it links up and I drag one side of the roof extremely high to match the function of this room.
Back to the settings of my community center. It’s a two story building with a staircase in the middle. In the ground floor there is an information desk at the entrance and a big lobby to have a rest. Besides, a room for children, a room for elder people and a room for sports is provided. In the first floor, there’s a big library and a big performance room. For a performance room, people need more spaces to holding activities and that’s why the roof in this area is much higher than the others.
For the color of the building, I followed architect’s step. I use a dark color like dark grey for the external wall and use bright colors such as light blue, red, white, green and orange to make it lively and full of energetic. Since community center is a multi-functional building, the use of color should be more cautious; it should make people happy and relax.
There is one interesting point, not only the exterior wall is transmutated, but also the interior wall. The internal walls of my community centre are not reggular, instead they are in angles. Have a look at the sections, because of the sloping wall, it's hard to arrange the door, thus, I decide to make this wall much thicker thus the door can be arranged in normal way.
To sum up, I think I did a successul transmution from the original building.

week 9 independent study

The Monaco House is a four storey building which located in a largely pedenstrain lane at the east end of Melboourne’s CBD. Dominant in the lane is the historic Melbournn Club wall and large plane trees emerging from the Melbourne Club garden.
At ground level entry and cafe are followed by two levels of office. The top level contains a small reception area to facilitate the client’s role as Honorary Consul of Monaco. Within the office, large apertures to the west are shaded by deep balconies and the adjoining plane trees. Outdoor balconies and the “ green - roofscape” provide areas of release from the office desk. The building is an essay in fine grained urbanism, it seeks to talk about its consular role as well as to enhance to pedestrain experience of the city.
In term of this Monaco House, the form and its circulation is quite similar to Klein Bottle House, the irregular triangled corner and multiple shaped of internor space create a completely diferrent feeling of architecture. Architecture is no longer dead and boring, instead, it's full of live and fun. That’s the main reason why I chose this building as my case study.
